QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Will hypnosis make me fall asleep or become unconscious ? No, this is a commonly held misconception. The body relaxes and the mind is alert and calm. You will be aware of the therapist’s voice and receptive to the positive suggestions being offered.
Will I be in control or do I give the therapist control over me ? You are always in control. The therapist works with you to design a programme to suit your individual requirements. Together you decide on the positive statements to be made whilst you are in hypnosis. It is not possible or desirable that the therapist make any suggestion to you that has not been agreed beforehand. It simply does not work. Your unconscious mind will reject any idea that is not compatible with your code of ideals. The therapeutic relationship works through mutual agreement and co-operation. It is based on trust and respect.
So it is not possible I will be made to do or say silly things ? No, that is contrary to the therapeutic process. The therapist wants you to feel better about yourself. Intention is the key element here. Hypnotherapy is about the business of helping you.
Am I hypnotizable ? Most people are capable of achieving a hypnotic trance. If you can daydream or lose yourself in an activity then you have already proved you can achieve a light trance. This may be all it takes to be able to appreciate hypnotherapy.
